Mikala Malone is Gifted. Just like her grandmother, she has the power to slow down time and enhance her five senses, giving her the ability to smell, hear, and see from miles away. After breaking free from a government holding cell, Mikala is determined to find her family and figure out how she got in the government's clutches to begin with. But one night searching for answers leads to a confrontation that leaves her seconds from death. A person neither human or Gifted attempts to kill her- by sucking her soul straight from her body. Mikala wouldn't have made it out alive if it wasn't for her quick blade and a suspicious figure that's been following her around. Soon after her near death experience, Mikala is thrust into a war between two species that has lasted for centuries. One side uses claws and canines, the other side uses strength and speed. Both sides have tried to kill her at least once. The last thing Mikala wants is to get involved. But her decision quickly changes when getting involved may just be the ticket to finding her family. And no soul-sucking predator or sharp-canine beast is going to get in the way of that.
